Excitement has taken over Parluken Town, Grand Kru County with the commencement of installation work on the first communication towel in the town.
This has been made possible through the Liberia Telecommunication Authority’s Universal Access Project.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Friday, February 8,2020 with town elders of Parluken and Universal Access Project Coordinator Lynch Monbo, Liberia Telecommunication Authority’s Universal Access Project Fund Coordinator Elijah Glay and K-Net Project Coordinator Mike Ntow from Ghana.
The understanding underscores the responsibilities of the Township to provide protection for the site that will usher them into the world of communication with the rest of the country and world.
K-Net are the contracting body that won the Proof of Concept award, all technical responsibilities will be through their engineering team. This is the first of two sites they will erect in the immediate future.
In Parluken the site chosen for the tower is on one of the highest points of elevation in the town. Excavation began Friday to clear the site which when completed will house a telecom tower for both network providers to provide services to the unserved area.
Temporary WiFi services are presently available for the first time in the Township. This is a tremendous boost to the local also who prior to this had never experienced connectivity.
Project Coordinator Lynch Monbo says the installation is on course and everyone is excited.
The Universal Access Program has three administrative units, the governing board is chaired by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, there are three service providers, the LTA is Secretary to the board while the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Liberia Chambers of Commerce complete the lineup of board members.
The Implementation Committee is headed by the LTA along three service providers mainly Internet Service Providers, one civil society group (Liberian Student IT Union).
The Implementation Committee form the Implementation Unit which is the PIU that runs the universal Access Fund.
