A project to provide technical assistance to the Liberia
Telecommunications Authority has been put in place by the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID).
The project code named “Pro ICT USAID Project for Liberia” will provide
technical assistance on Universal Assess and FM frequency regulations.
USAID Lead Consultant Mr. Henry Benson said the technical assistance on
Universal Asses is to see how the funding can be used for the best
impact to benefit the sector.
He disclosed that, under Universal Assess, the project intends to boost
the current efforts of the LTA in making sure that telecommunications
services are available to unserved and underserved communities or towns
across Liberia.
Benson, a former Commissioner at the LTA said he intends to work with
the LTA team to make sure the project achieved its desired objectives by
building new based stations across the country.
He said based on discussions with the LTA, the project will develop a
a package that would focus on capacity building and provide technical
assistance through equipment supply.
According to Benson, The Pro ICT USAID Project for Liberia also intends
to look at the development of regulatory issues with the LTA and noted
that the project will also place a key focus on the strengthening of
regulations of frequencies for FM radio operators
He said most of those assigned frequencies are not complying with the
construct and details within their licenses while most operators are
using more power than what has been given them by the LTA.
The USAID Lead Consultant also revealed that his team intends to meet
with all actors in the sector including the Ministry of Information, the
Press Union of Liberia among others.
